Tommy Tuberville’s Campaign Bus Catches Fire Outside of Ft Payne on I-59

A bus from Tommy Tuberville’s U.S. Senate campaign caught fire Wednesday night on I-59 in DeKalb County.  No injuries were reported during the incident and Tuberville was not on the bus when the fire started around 8:00.  The vehicle was traveling along I-59 near Hammondville – when – according to Tuberville’s campaign manager, the fire started during a test drive shortly after maintenance.

Tyler Pruett, Public Information Officer for the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office – stated that the cause of the fire is unknown; however, no foul play is suspected.  The northbound lanes of the interstate near mile marker 227 were completely shutdown as a result of the fire and Pruett said the bus was believed to be a total loss.

Tuberville is currently seeking the Republican nomination for Alabama’s junior seat in the U.S. Senate.  The former Auburn football coach is facing former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions in a run-off on July 14th.  The Republican nominee will challenge Democrat Doug Jones, who currently holds the Senate seat.

Tuberville’s campaign manager grabbed the “quote of the day” after the incident, by saying “Tuberville’s candidacy has obviously caught fire with voters…and our bus has, too,” adding “We’re thankful that no one was hurt in the incident and for the remarkable first responders who assisted immediately.”
