12 Margin of Excellence Grants to be Awarded to GSCC Faculty and Staff Members

GSCC 1000Twelve Margin of Excellence grants will be awarded to members of Gadsden State Community College’s faculty and staff. The winners will be recognized at a reception from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23 at Gadsden State’s One Stop Center on the East Broad Campus.

“Gadsden State is honored to have an endowment program that supports significant impact projects that benefit our students,” said Dr. Martha Lavender, interim president. “Our Margin of Excellence Committee provided leadership and guidance in the selection of the projects that are being awarded grants ranging from $1,200 to $20,000.”

In 1989, the U.S. Department of Education awarded Gadsden State an endowment challenge grant. The following academic year, Gadsden State raised $370,500 from faculty, staff and community supporters. With the federal match, Gadsden State had an endowment fund of $741,000, which was to be held in an interest-bearing account for 20 years. This money is used to fund scholarships and special projects for students through the Margin of Excellence Grant.

“The decision was made to award $125,000 during this grant cycle among projects that can be completed in a timely manner and, preferably, can be self-sustaining after grant funds are expended,” Lavender said. “Funding is awarded for equipment for instructional or operational use, special events or projects, student scholarships, professional development, special cultural and educational programs, speakers, publications or other areas that benefit and assist our students, faculty or staff.”
