Two Accidents on Highway 68 Going Up the Mountain on Monday

Shortly before 12:00 noon on Monday, two people were injured in an accident as they were going up the mountain on Highway 68 in Leesburg.  That wreck involved an 18 wheeler and a small pickup with the big rig leaving the highway, then crashing into some trees along the roadside – ejecting the driver in the process.

Both drivers were injured, with at least one person being airlifted from the landing zone set up in the parking lot of the FEMA Building in Leesburg for treatment. The driver of the third vehicle narrowly escaped injury after his van was damaged by flying debris from the impact of the collision.

Traffic was backed up for an extended period of time as emergency personnel responded to the scene.  During that time a second accident took place where traffic had backed up down the mountain.  Early reports indicate that one person was being taken by private vehicle to be checked out and two other people were injured.

We’ll have more information once the accident reports are released.

Both accidents remain under investigation.
