Two big innings propel Spring Garden softball at Cedar Bluff

CEDAR BLUFF – The Spring Garden Lady Panthers broke open a close game with seven runs in the top of the fourth inning and added six more in the top of the fifth to take a 16-1 softball win at Cedar Bluff in five innings on Monday.

Spring Garden (19-6) sent 13 batters to the plate in the fourth and 12 in the fifth. Kayley Kirk, Abbey Steward and Ace Austin led the Lady Panthers at the plate with three hits apiece. One of Kirk’s hits was a double. Kirk and Austin also walked. Kylie-Grace Wood and Abbie Woods both added a pair of hits. Woods also walked. Neely Welsh added a two-run triple in the fourth.

Steward picked up the win for the Lady Panthers. She surrendered an unearned run on two hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.

Reece Patterson singled to right in the bottom of the second and Jordyn Walker singled to right center in the third for the lone Cedar Bluff (7-17-1) hits. Mattie Payne drove in the Lady Tigers’ lone run on a grounder to second in the third. Walker suffered the loss. She finished with three strikeouts.
