Two Charged with Intentionally Over Medicating Hospice Patient Who Later Died

Two women were arrested in Etowah County after police say they admitted to intentionally over medicating a hospice patient who later died.

Sergeant Jay Freeman of the Southside Police Department says Caroline Renee Burton, age 42, and Brooke Tuck Ragsdale, 34 were both arrested Friday and charged with First Degree Assault.  They remain in the Etowah County Jail on $50,000 bond each.  Freeman stated that Southside Police Investigators plan to meet this week with the Etowah County District Attorney’s office to possibly pursue other charges.

The two women worked at Woodland Place Assisted Living in Southside, where Burton was the Administrator; the victim’s family contacted police saying they believed the patient was being overmedicated.  The patient was taken to a local hospital where lab work was done before she died.

Freeman said state officials are also expected to launch their own investigation.
