Two Cherokee County Corrections Officers Recognized During Monday’s County Commission Meeting

Two Cherokee County Corrections Officers were recognized during the Monday meeting of the Cherokee County Commission. Officers Will Bailey and Logan Moore both received certificates from the National Institute of Jail Operations.The Cherokee County Commission, Cherokee County Health Care Authority and Cherokee Medical Center have reached an agreement to bring a fully functional Morgue to the hospital. During Monday’s meeting County Administrator Tim Burgess said that the project would cost in excess of $50,000 however the county will be receiving $35,000 of that from a grant from the Health Care Authority.

Cherokee County Coroner Dr. Jeremy Deaton was not present at the meeting but we were able to speak with him by phone on Monday evening and he told us that this facility will be very beneficial for his office.

During the Planning Session held just prior to the meeting, Bob Pickerel and Sam Marko with the Weiss Lake Improvement Association addressed the commission concerning the upcoming lake cleanup project in April. Alabama Power, Alabama PALS, Renew Our Rivers and local schools and municipalities in a major cleanup project across the county. Weiss Lake Improvement is simply requesting that the county participate in planning assistance with the project with Deputy Administrator Daniel Steele being named as the point of contact for the county.

Also during the planning session, EMA Director Shawn Rogers announced that the county had been awarded $162,400 in grant funds from the Department of Homeland Security, money that will be used to enhance public safety in Cherokee County. Sheriff Jeff Shaver expressed his appreciation to Rogers for his hard work in obtaining the grant and stated that the $40,000 allotted to the sheriff’s office will save that amount on his budget since the grant is fully funded with no match.

During their regular meeting, Vice Chairman Carlton Teague announced that the appointment/reappointment to the CED Mental Health Board will take place on
Monday, December 11th and the appointment of three positions to the Cherokee County Public Building Authority will also take place at that same meeting.

The Commission also adopted the 2018 Holiday Schedule and approved the State Homeland Security Grant Program cooperative grant agreement for the Cherokee County EMA and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office in addition to declaring a 2006 Chevy Colorado as surplus to be sold on govdeals.com.

The Commission granted permission to the East Alabama Regional Planning Commission to proceed with the grant application process on behalf of the Cherokee County Parks and Recreation Board for projects at Cherokee Rock Village Park.
