Two GSCC Students Selected as Members of All Alabama Academic Team

TOP 2Two students were selected to represent Gadsden State Community College as members of the All-Alabama Academic Team. Hannah Gregg of Cedar Bluff and Katie Sisk of Alexandria were honored at a dinner in Birmingham where they were recognized by the Alabama Community College System and received $1,000 academic scholarships from the All-Alabama
Academic Team Foundation.

Both students have volunteered their time participating in various campus and community functions.

Gregg, a general studies major, plans to transfer to the University of Alabama where she received the UA Noyce Scholarship in Chemistry Education beginning fall semester 2015. At Gadsden State she was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Student Government Association, vice president of the National Society of Leadership and Success, Student Support Services tutor, and the Science, Math, and Engineering Club. She also maintained a 4.0 GPA, was named Outstanding SGA Officer, and achieved the President’s List. “Last summer, I traveled 5,000 miles with a missionary-evangelist in the U.S. and Mexico in a span of six weeks. Working with poverty stricken youth made me thankful for my culture and education,” said Gregg. In addition to her
Gadsden State tutoring sessions, Gregg also works as a personal tutor with high school students in upper level math and science classes. “Because I want to become a teacher, tutoring has given me experience in helping struggling students grasp concepts by using numerous teaching styles for maximum comprehension, she added. Gregg was also named Coca-Cola Bronze
Scholar and received an additional $1,000 scholarship from the All-USA Academic Team Foundation.

Sisk, is also a general studies major and plans to transfer to Jacksonville State University to obtain a degree in nursing with hopes of working as a neonatal nurse practitioner. She is vice president of Fellowship for Phi Theta Kappa and Student Support Services tutor. She has received several honors and awards including President’s List, Outstanding Composition Student, Outstanding Literature Student, and Student Support Services Superior Academic Achievement. Sisk is certified in CPR and as a Red Cross lifeguard where she worked with the YMCA Summer Day Camp. She remarked, “One of the things I loved about the camp was getting to see kids from so many different walks of life play and have fun together. There is no discrimination or prejudice among young children. It is refreshing to be around people who choose their friends based on which games they like to play. The summer camp was an uplifting experience for me.”

All-Alabama Academic team members are nominated by the faculty and reviewed by a selection committee. To be eligible, students must have a 3.25 minimum GPA, complete at least 12 hours at the nominating college, and be involved in campus activities. Each community college in the Alabama Community College System nominates two students. The team nominees are
also entered in the All-USA Academic team competition, which is sponsored by USA Today and Phi Theta Kappa.
