Two Struck By Lightning in Chattooga County on Monday

Two people were reportedly struck by lightning Monday afternoon in Chattooga County.

According to the Summerville News, at around 1:45pm emergency workers responded to the 400 block of Back Penn Road where a 14 year old girl had been struck by lightning and just moments later, at approximately 2:10pm, a call came in from a 35 year old man saying he’d been struck as well.  Emergency crews were then dispatched to his location off Skelton Street.

Both individuals received non-life threatening injuries during that abrupt thunderstorm, which hit the area around 1:30.

To minimize your chances of being struck by lightning, the easiest and most simple solution is to go indoors – failing that, an automobile can also serve as an effective shelter.

If you do find yourself caught outside in severe weather DO NOT seek shelter beneath a tree – as lightning will strike the highest point in any given area, instead, crouch down on the ground with your feet close together.  This will minimize both your chances of being struck and the chance of a nearby strike flowing into you.

Also, wait at least 30 minutes after the last lightning strike or clap of thunder before you return to any outdoor activities; remember if you can hear thunder there’s a chance you could be struck by lightning.
