U.S. Postal Service Seeking Rate Increase Early Next Year

It may cost more to mail a letter starting next year – and that’s not all.

The U.S. Postal Service has filed a request with the Postal Regulatory Commission, seeking a price change which would take effect January 27th of 2019 – and, that proposal would raise mailing service product prices across the board.

The cost for First Class Forever Stamps would increase from 50 cents to 55 cents – Priority Mail Retail Flat Rates would include similar increases as listed below:

Small Flat Rate Box – from $7.20 to $7.90

Medium Flat Rate Box – from $13.65 to $14.35

Large Flat Rate Box – from $18.90 to $19.95.

Regular Flat Rate Envelope – from $6.70 to $7.35

Large Flat Rate Envelope – from $7.00 to $7.65

Padded Flat Rate Envelope – from $7.25 to $8.00.

Also, First Class mailing services would reportedly begin using zone-based pricing, in order “to better align with the cost of service and improve value based on distance.”

No additional costs will be added for weekend or holiday delivery OR surcharges for fuel or residential delivery, according to the Postal Service.
