Updated Weather Forecast / Fronts Possibly Moving into Area Ahead of Schedule

According to the National Weather Service strong to severe storms will be possible in Alabama today (Wednesday) all the way through Saturday.

Storms are expected to develop ahead of two cold fronts, and one warm front.  One of the cold fronts is expected to move into the state late tonight or Thursday.  The other is expected over the weekend; this weather system could bring damaging winds, hail, heavy rain and possibly a tornado.

There have been some new developments as the Storm Prediction Center has added, and expanded, an “enhanced” risk for severe weather for most of north Alabama.   An enhanced risk is Level 3 out of 5 and that means that numerous severe storms will be possible

Also forecasters now think those storms could arrive earlier reaching north Alabama later this afternoon instead of tonight.

A low-end risk for severe weather has been added for the northern third of Alabama, for Friday; heavy rain and storms were moving across the state Wednesday morning, with the stronger storms expected to start this afternoon.

North Alabama could see an inch to 1.5 inches of rain – through Thursday morning in addition to rain that has already fallen.

Strong to severe storms will be possible Friday night through Saturday morning – as  a warm front moves northward across the region.  The northwest corner of the state has a Level 2 risk for severe weather while the rest of the region has a Level 1 risk on Friday into Saturday.  There could be a third round of storms later on Saturday – and possibly lasting into Sunday ahead of another cold front.

The weather service said changes to the risk levels and timing will be possible over the next few days, but to expect severe weather on Saturday, and those storms could bring an additional 2 to 3 inches of rainfall to the region – which could raise flooding concerns.  Those storms are expected to move out by Sunday and cold air will rush in – which could bring the possibility of a brief wintry mix to parts of the area.
