US stocks edge higher as tariff debate continues

iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — U.S. stocks made small gains after a volatile day on Wall Street as investors continue to follow the debate over tariffs the White House wants to impose on steel and aluminum.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 9.36 (+0.04 percent) to finish the session at 24,884.12.

The Nasdaq climbed 41.30 (+0.56 percent) to close at 7,372.01, while the S&P 500 finished trading at 2,728.12, up 7.18 (+0.26 percent) for the day.

Crude oil prices were little changed at $62.50 per barrel.

Winners and Losers:  UPS’s stock was upgraded by Stifel from “Hold” to “Buy,” pushing the stock to finish 3.77 percent higher.

Shares of Target Corporation slumped 4.45 percent after reporting an earnings miss in the fourth quarter attributed to wage increases and digital initiatives.
