Victim in Powell Shooting Incident Previously Fired for Bringing Gun to School

DCSO - Shooting 1It turns out that the man who was the victim in a recent shooting incident occurring in the Powell community of DeKalb County had been fired by the Jackson County Board of Education back in 2010, for allegedly bringing a gun to school.

44 year old Dutton resident, Cecil “Monte” Gant, had been serving as the director of the Earnest Pruett Center of Technology, and as such, an employee of the school system.

He was initially placed on administrative leave but was later fired by a unanimous vote of four to nothing, according to information in the Ft Payne Times-Journal and the Daily Sentinel.

DCSO - Shooting 3According to DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris Gant had gone to the home of LaWayne Bell on July 2nd, and Bell fired several rounds through the front door, striking Gant at least twice.

Gant was transported to Huntsville Hospital for treatment following the incident and he has since been released.

It’s apparently at least the third time in recent weeks that the two have been involved in a dispute – Bell was questioned following the shooting, but has not been charged.

According to Sheriff Harris, during the interview Bell offered evidence of on-going threats from Gant.

Harris says that the investigation is on-going and the case will likely be presented to a grand jury in the near future.
