Forever a constant of 1A Girls Basketball, Spring Garden said goodbye in their final season before the move up to 2A next year the best way they know how: by bringing home the top prize! In front of a solid sized crowd at BJCC Legacy Arena on Thursday evening, SG came out on top by a final score of 53-45 to win their 3rd blue map in the last 5 seasons.
The top ranked Lady Panthers, who finish the season with a record of 35-2, got down early in this contest due to great play from the opposing Lady Wildcats of #3 St. Luke’s Episcopal (22-5). Being held for just 3-for-11 from the floor in the 1st period, Spring Garden found better footing to finish the 1st half only down by 2 points. From the locker room and into the second half, we saw a sight we’ve become accustomed to, and that being Spring Garden finding their groove and finishing shots like they were supposed to, taking a lead in the contest and never looking back. Solid defense finished things up, and celebration was all that was on the minds of the Lady Panthers once that final buzzer sounded!
Three Lady Panthers were named to the All-Tournament team, and all three had big impacts in the State title game for Spring Garden. The tournament MVP, sophomore Neely Welsh, finished with 12 points, a team-high 6 rebounds, team-high 3 assists, and team-high 6 steals. 7th grader Ace Austin was the top scorer for SG, finishing with 14 points along with 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal; and senior Macy Reedy finished with 10 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 assist. Joining them on the All-Tournament team were two young ladies from St. Luke’s; sophomore Iamunique Bowie finished with a team-high 12 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists; and senior Elizabeth Roebuck had 9 points, team-high 6 rebounds, team-high 2 blocks, and team-high 1 steal. Freshman Chloe Gilmore also finished with 10 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and a team-high 1 steal.
Congratulations once again to the Spring Garden Lady Panthers on an incredible season and for bringing home another State Championship! And congrats to St. Luke’s for their incredible efforts and for bringing their best in the school’s first ever Girls Basketball State Championship game appearance!
