What Tropical Storm Harvey Could Mean for Alabama

According to the National Weather Service, as Tropical Storm Harvey finally moves toward the north and east, Alabama will definitely get some rain from the storm.

Here’s the outlook for what the state could see:

SOUTH ALABAMA

The greatest risk of flooding will be for southwest Alabama – the closest to where Harvey is expected to make landfall. Rain, some of it heavy will be possible through Thursday evening for south Alabama. A flash flood watch is in effect for several counties in the southwestern portion of the state through Thursday evening.

Forecasters are saying that between 4 and 6 inches of rain could fall over the next few days, and the weather service added that the watch may need to be expanded eastward over the next few days.

CENTRAL ALABAMA

Bands of moderate to heavy rain will be possible from Wednesday into Friday.

More widespread and heavier rain will be possible on Thursday, and forecasters will be on guard for the possibility of flooding.  There will also be the chance of a few quick tornadoes, through the threat is low at this time.

NORTH ALABAMA

Isolated storms will be possible across north Alabama starting late Wednesday according to the National Weather Service in Huntsville.  Several rounds of rain and storms will be possible starting on Wednesday, possibly lasting into Saturday.  Heavy rain will be possible, as well as brief tornadoes starting Thursday night and lasting into Friday night.

Forecasters said the potential for heavy bursts of rain could raise flooding concerns as well.

Harvey or its remnants is expected to move out of the area by the end of the weekend, but it will leave behind a humid airless for the next few days.
