“What’s New, Pussycat?” or “Much Ado About Nothing”

You could call it a case of “mistaken identity” maybe – or whatever, but it seems that video of what was believed to possibly be a Bobcat, or even a Mountain Lion – is more than likely just a plain ol’ pussycat.

A woman reported to media outlets that she captured the image of the “big cat” on a doorbell camera from her home in the Cross creek community in Madison County.

The video and screenshots were shared widely on social media, and many speculated on just exactly WHAT they were seeing – with a large number of suggestions covering the aforementioned critters.

But, it turns out that an official with the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries said that the image likely shows a housecat based on the animal’s build and – the Alabama Department of Conservation & Natural Resources says Mountain Lions or Panthers are commonly reported in Alabama though they are, in truth more likely to be “misidentifications of domestic dogs and cats, coyotes and bobcats.”

Bobcats are common in Alabama, but are typically nocturnal.
